Meet the Minds Behind the Science!
Rachel Matthews
PhD Student in the Physics of Medicine
Meet Rachel, a dynamic scientist with a passion for unravelling the mysteries of diagnosing kidney cancer. When she's not marvelling at the stunning beauty of cellular imaging in her lab, she’s steering clear of the less glamorous toxic chemicals that come with the territory. Outside of science, Rachel dives deep—literally—as an avid scuba diver, she can be found exploring the underwater world, stitching up some creativity with her sewing projects, and or savouring a delicious college brunch with friends. Curious, adventurous, and always hungry for discovery (and good food!), Rachel brings her unique spark to the world of science.
Rachel's work is done in partnership with Semarion Ltd.

Celia Chen
PhD Student in the Quantum Matter Group
Meet Celia, a materials scientist and physicist, with a curious eye for discovering new and wonderful materials that can solve the world’s grand challenges in sustainability. She is focused on exploring the next generation of optoelectronic materials for light-emitting diodes and photovoltaics. When she is not in the lab mixing up fun concoctions, she is baking a whirlwind of treats (chemistry is like baking, but you can eat your products), on a relaxing run (emphasis on relaxing) or playing some tunes on her flute.
Andrea Rogolino
PhD Student in the Photo-electrochemistry Lab
Meet Andrea, a chemist fascinated by the colourful and intricate interactions between light and matter. In his challenging attempts to approach the wonderful molecular machinery of photosynthesis, he combines light and electricity to design photoelectrochemical systems for the conversion of waste into valuable chemicals. Outside the lab, he sometimes still stares at the leaves of plants to learn some botany (hoping to learn their language to interrogate them and get access to the secrets of photosynthesis). He also enjoys reading, writing stories outside science (but with the eyes of a scientist!), and getting lost in the soothing water of a swimming pool or in the magical world of a good movie.
